The marketing ROI myth

Why social posting does not sell capital equipment, and what actually does

3 minute read

The trap

Most established firms have tried marketing once. Usually it looked like this: someone posting on social media, a few hundred likes from people who will never buy, and nothing you could point to on the order book.

The conclusion feels obvious: marketing does not work for businesses like ours. The conclusion is wrong. What did not work was posting, which was never going to sell a considered purchase to a busy buyer.

How your buyer actually buys

Nobody buys machinery off a social post. But your buyer does search when a machine goes down or a contract comes up. They do open a well-researched email that mentions their business specifically. And they do remember the firm that followed up properly while your competitor went quiet.

None of that is brand awareness. All of it is measurable.

What to spend on instead

Three things, all of which report in enquiries and orders rather than likes.

Search ads on the terms buyers type when they have budget. Researched outreach to the specific firms you want as customers. And follow-up that chases every enquiry and every quote until there is an answer.

Run those three and every pound is tagged to the enquiry it produced and the order it turned into. That is the test worth applying to anything you are sold: can it show you the order it produced? If it cannot, it is posting with extra steps.
