TL;DR: Asking a first-time visitor which product variant they prefer is asking for knowledge they don’t have. Cold traffic answers use-case questions, not product questions.
From the audit vault: From an audit of a meat-snacks brand whose product-preference question came straight from its product pages: great for returning customers, unanswerable for someone meeting the brand for the first time.
A new visitor does not know which flavour, variant or model they like, because they have never tried any of them. Ask anyway and they either guess, giving you noisy data, or bounce, costing you the signup. The question was written for a customer, shown to a stranger.
Cold traffic can always answer questions about themselves: what they are shopping for, what problem they want solved, what situation they are buying for. Those use-case answers segment just as well and convert far better at the top of the funnel.

Preference questions belong post-purchase or deep in browsing behaviour, when the customer has real opinions. Sequence the asks: use-case at signup, preference after the first order.

Data & Personalisation
The first-name field on your pop-up buys you “Hi Sarah”. One qualifying question buys you a segmented list from day one.
Data & Personalisation
A short quiz turns signup into a consultation: the visitor tells you their problem, you answer with a product, and the data powers everything after.
