Nobody Needs Their First Name. Ask A Better Question.

Dan, Co-Founder · 7 Jun 2026 · 3 min read

TL;DR: The first-name field on your pop-up buys you “Hi Sarah”. One qualifying question buys you a segmented list from day one.

From the audit vault: Recommended in nearly every audit we run, from supplements to occasionwear: swap the name field for a single question about what the visitor is shopping for or trying to solve.

What the name field actually earns

A first name lets you personalise a greeting, and that is roughly it. In 2026 the field is a habit, not a strategy. The pop-up gives you one or two asks before friction bites, so every field has to pay rent, and the name field doesn’t.

What one question earns instead

Ask what they are shopping for, or which problem brought them here. A dropdown with four options is enough. That single answer routes the subscriber into the right welcome journey, personalises the first product recommendation, and starts a profile you will keep enriching for years.

Keep it to one

One question converts almost identically to none; three questions is a quiz and belongs elsewhere. If a second data point matters, infer it later from browsing and purchase behaviour rather than asking upfront.

Ship this

Every pop-up field must pay rent; the name field doesn’t.

One shopping-intent question segments the list from the first second.

Cap it at one; infer the rest from behaviour.

Why Cold Visitors Can’t Answer Your Quiz

Asking a first-time visitor which product variant they prefer is asking for knowledge they don’t have. Cold traffic answers use-case questions, not product questions.
