From Ad Click To Klaviyo Profile: Tagging Intent At The Door.

Dan, Co-Founder · 15 May 2026 · 4 min read

TL;DR: The UTM on an ad click tells you exactly why a visitor came. Write it onto their profile at signup and every email afterwards can use it.

From the audit vault: The single most repeated recommendation across our audits, from femcare to jewellery to supplements: nobody was connecting the ad that won the click to the emails that followed.

The mechanics

Each ad carries a UTM identifying its angle. When the visitor signs up, that parameter is captured and written to a custom profile property in Klaviyo: interest, pain point, persona. It is plumbing, not magic, and it takes an afternoon to set up properly.

What it makes possible

The subscriber who clicked a recovery-focused ad gets a first email about recovery. The one who clicked the gifting angle gets the gifting journey. Same flow, different branches, each speaking to the exact motivation that earned the click. This is the difference between emailing an audience and emailing a person.

Go further: pop-up per angle

The strongest version matches the pop-up itself to the ad angle, so the capture moment continues the ad’s promise instead of resetting it. Different headline, same incentive, tagged source. Continuity from ad to pop-up to inbox is what makes paid traffic feel understood.

Why Cold Visitors Can’t Answer Your Quiz

Asking a first-time visitor which product variant they prefer is asking for knowledge they don’t have. Cold traffic answers use-case questions, not product questions.
