Your Old List Is An Asset. Warm It Properly.

TL;DR: A dormant list of past customers is stored revenue, but blasting it cold torches deliverability. Segment by recency and re-enter gradually.

From the audit vault: From an audit of a trade retailer sitting on a 50,000-address historical list: valuable, and dangerous to wake carelessly.

The asset and the risk

Past customers know the brand and have bought before: the cheapest revenue available. But inbox providers read a sudden blast to years-old addresses as spammer behaviour, and the resulting bounces and complaints can damage sending for the addresses that still matter.

Re-enter by recency ring

Start with the most recent and engaged ring, send genuinely useful re-introduction content, and watch the metrics. Expand ring by ring only while engagement holds. Addresses that never respond across several attempts get sunset, keeping the asset clean.

Give the return a reason

The first email back should acknowledge the gap and offer something worth returning for: what changed, what is new, a reason to re-engage now. “We missed you, here’s 10%” is not a reason, it is an apology with a price tag.

Wake by recency rings, expanding only while engagement holds.

Lead with what changed, not with an apology discount.
